Flip Book Project

As part of our introduction to animation project we were to play and experiment with more traditional techniques uniques. Therefore for this task we were to create three separate flip books all of which showing the movement of different balloons under different circumstances. These circumstances or actions were, Flicked ballon, Propellent ballon and Dropped water filled balloon. The idea of this task was to watch how the different balloons behaved and how we could capture them in a traditional style animation.

To get started on this task I began by filming each of there balloons. Its was important to film the balloon so I could refer back to it when creating the individual drawings. Below shows each of the videpos I captured.

After filming the balloon videos above I began thinking about how I could then capture this movement into my flip book. I decided to make diagrams for the three different animations so I could use these as a guide when nit came to drawing there key frames.

I found these diagrams useful; as I was able to analyser the movement of the balloon first and workout how many frames should go between each key movement. It was important to think about the timing as it is a key element of making an animation effective. By creating this plan I was also able to think about the other 12 principles and where they copuldf be applied in my animation. For example the water filled balloon;loon ewe see both arc and squash ands stretch. Both of these principles play around with the idea of physics and how important it is to consider these movements and change of shape too help create a realistic animation.

Above shows the first videos taken of the flip books I created. I wanted to show how these flip b looks would work physically however, I felt it wasn't very effective as unfortunately the paper I used was to thick, and therefore when I went to flick through the pages some key frames got stuck and therefore were missed and broke up the overall animation. Therefore after experimenting with stop motion animation I decided to come back to my flip book task and film it in a way that would bee much clearer to the viewer. Below shows each of these videos. To create these I took individual photos of each keyframe before editing them in premier to bring them all together and creating the moving illusion.

Overall I was happy with this task once filming it with a stop motion approach I was able to really review my animation and see what didn't work and what did. I was definitely happy with the use of the 12 principles as I feel there was good clear examples  of squash and stretch, arc and exaggeration. However, if I was to change and improve some elements I would work more on the timing adding extra frames in places to make it look smoother and appear less clunky. However for a first attempt of a flip book I feel this was successful.
